What Can We Learn from the History of Weed Smoking?

With the wide range of cutting-edge weed accessories for sale today, it’s easy to dismiss the long history of smoking weed. Did you know that human beings have been using cannabis for recreational and medicinal purposes for thousands of years?

Over thousands of years, humans have developed their weed smoking techniques from simple bowls to sleek silicone bongs.

There is a lot we can learn from the history of weed. These facts can be great to bring up and discuss during a group smoking session.

 When Was Weed First Smoked?

The history of weed is so ancient that it is difficult to know exactly where it begins. The cannabis plant is believed to be one of the first ever plants cultivated and grown by humans. Grown across ancient Asia, its fibers were used for clothes, and it was consumed as a food source.

The earliest evidence of weed smoking was found in a 2500-year-old Chinese tomb. Archeologists discovered brazier bowls used for burning incense or plants.

These bowls were tested and found to have traces of cannabis and THC.

From Asia, cannabis spread to eastern Africa and the Middle East. In the 1500s, the Spanish brought cannabis to the Americas.

 The History of the Bong

The modern bong or water pipe is heavily inspired by hookahs used for shisha smoking. It is widely believed that the first hookah pipe was invented in India in the 16th century. A hookah is kept lit with charcoal, and a bowl sits on its top. Hookahs were first used to smoke tobacco but were adapted into the bongs we know and love specifically for smoking weed.

The Hippie Movement

Even today, weed smoking is frequently associated with the hippie subculture of the 1960s. This was most abundant in the United States, but also spread to other countries around the world.

In the 1960s, the world was rife with violence and war. The hippie movement stood in opposition to this. Their sub-culture included long hair and beards, new music, a desire for love and peace and a chilled-out attitude towards life. The movement grew so great that it changed the course of society forever.

The hippies were ahead of their time in many ways, so it’s no surprise that weed became associated with their movement.

Weed smoking was a common sight at hippie gatherings and meetings. It was a great way to destress and relax when the world was filled with such turmoil.
