How is CBD Extracted?

Wondering how CBD products are produced? Well, you have come to the right place. CBD products in general are made of its oil. Whether using glass bongs or vape pens, there are multiple ways this oil can be extracted, and it needs one to be highly skilled and equipped with the latest tech to make high-end products. Without the process of extraction, the cannabis industry is quite limited. In such a case, it would be all about hemp flowers without any variety. In this blog, let’s look at how CBD oil is extracted.

The Extraction

Close your eyes for a moment and imagine a cannabis industry without gummies, vapes, capsules, oils, and topicals. How do you feel? We know. The thought can be exhausting. In fact, it is hard to imagine.

CBD is extracted from cannabis plants. Using different technologies, one can go for marijuana or hemp plants for its extraction. The way CBD is extracted impacts the quality of the product and represents its chemical profile. When it comes to hemp-derived CBD oils, they usually have less than one per cent of THC. Therefore, they cannot get the user high as desired. However, the absence of intoxicating effects makes it legal on a federal level. On the other hand, marijuana has a significant concentration of THC, even more than ten per cent. This means it is more than enough to intoxicate a user.

CO2 Extraction

Co2 is a gas but when different pressures and temperatures are applied, it can change its form. The plant material is added to an extraction chamber and it is then filled with supercritical Co2. It acts like the perfect solvent the plant material requires. The result is a clean product with consistent batches of terpenes and CBD concentration.

Equipment Used

The equipment used while doing CO2 extraction consists of multi-chamber machines. They use special pumps which are used to force supercritical CO2 into the extraction vessel where the plant is present. It breaks the trichomes and dissolves the plant material.

Ethanol Extraction

The extraction of CBD from ethanol is one of the least expensive methods. Alcohol is considered safe. However, purging of alcohol from the final products requires extra care otherwise it can lead to explosions. In this type of extraction, the hemp plant is soaked in alcohol. It is then strained, heated, and suspended.

Equipment Used

Since it is not an expensive method and requires less investment than CO2 extraction, it is used by small-scale companies. The equipment includes professional machinery, a large tank where plant matter is soaked, a heating machine, and industrial strainers.

Dry Ice Extraction

This method is widely used at home and is one of the best. However, a lot more time is needed for this method than CO2 extraction or ethanol extraction. It makes high-quality CBD hash without using harsh solvents. Remember, solventless extraction always produces better quality hash than extractions where solvents are involved.
